Carol, Cynthia, Vanessa, and Sharon are Creating through Cancer at CSCDE!

SHARON
Sharon is a two time cancer survivor. In 2000 she was diagnosed with uterine cancer and then in 2010 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had a mastectomy and received chemo treatment at Rutgers Cancer Institute of NJ. Following her treatment, she retired and she and her husband moved to Delaware. Her neighbor at the time was attending the support group at Cancer Support Community Delaware in Kent County and asked her to come along. Sharon brought a positive attitude and outlook to the group and enjoyed spending time with the ladies. She began to explore other classes and programs with a focus on her survivorship goals to stay healthy, eat right and exercise. Sharon attended chair yoga, but was ready for more. She began attending the weekly dancercise class with Jessica Moyer almost 4 years ago. She attributes her low blood pressure and relief from arthritis to the dancercise class.

“I started going to chair yoga with Mary Bruno, which was very good, and I met a lot of wonderful people, but then I graduated, I wanted more. I went to dancercise with Jessica Moyer and I joined two bowling teams. Keeping active and having a positive attitude keeps you going. Your attitude is going to get you there. The ones that have a positive attitude, they’re the ones that survive.”

CYNTHIA
“Someone says, ‘creative journaling’ and you think, ‘oh my gosh, I have to write and write and write’, and you don’t. It’s not that kind of journaling. It is a personal way of either savoring the good or getting rid of a challenge. It helps to remind us that there is a whole lot more to each one of us than our cancer experiences.” (Sussex County, DE)

CAROL
“I have always been kind of a loner and until I went through cancer I didn’t realize how important a supportive community was. I get so much pleasure from being with these incredible, strong, courageous, big-hearted women. I hoped the women would find that sense of community and learn from one another, both about their journeys, and about getting stitches from one needle to the next. The creation of a fabric is incidental. The real creation that goes on in this room are the bonds. The bonds are so strong. People are so open and honest and unafraid to be open and honest. It is a safe space for everybody.” (New Castle County, DE )

Help us reach our $40,000 goal by January 31st!

Every year nearly 1,200 Delawareans, just like Cynthia, Vanessa, Carol, and Sharon, walk through our doors after hearing the words, “you have cancer”. They are looking for the support they need on their cancer journey. We are here to offer that support, at no cost to them, through professionally led emotional support groups, mind/body wellness classes, and educational workshops.

We rely on donors, like you, to maintain our year round support groups, classes and workshops at our four facilities statewide. Your donation to CSCDE stays in Delaware to help Delawareans impacted by cancer, supporting them from diagnosis to remission and beyond.

Thank you for your donation and your commitment to taking on cancer together with us.
